Pope County was formed primarily from Conway
County on November 2, 1829, seven years before
the Territory of Arkansas became the State of
Arkansas in 1836.

Court was held in several places before the
first Court House was built in Dover in 1840.    
  
Russellville was officially incorporated June
7, 1870, and the county seat was moved from Dover to Russellville May 16, 1888. 
    
The Chactas Prairie began to be tamed when
P.C. Holledger built the first house in 1834. The house was purchased in 1835 by Dr. Thomas Russell.
   
The Chamber staff feels a deep sense of history and commitment to our city because the first house in Russellville and the home of the town's namesake was on the site where the Chamber
of Commerce now stands.
